Body structure
The black panda has a very distinctive appearance as their fur is both black and white. Their fur helps them survive in cool forests. The giant panda's fur is made of two different types of hairs. There are long, thick, coarse hairs and a shorter, fine, dense underfur. This fur is waterproof. As the giant panda starts to reach towards seven months of age they will start to grow permanent teeth. The giant panda's back teeth are seven times the size of human's, with a wide surface area. Both their powerful jaw bones and strong teeth help them crush and grind bamboo. They have four paws with five fingers and a thumb used for climbing trees and gripping bamboo. Adult pandas are about 75 cm (2 and a half ft) tall and 1.5 metres (5 ft) long. Male giant pandas weigh up to 150 kg (330 lb) in captivity. Female giant pandas are smaller, weighing up to 125 kg (275 lb) in captivity.
