Method of reproduction
Giant pandas reproduce through mating through a procedure similar to other mammals. The mating season takes place between March and May, when the female has a two- or three-day period of estrous. A female can mate with several males, who compete with each other to mate with her. A male will seek out different females who are in heat. Copulation between giant pandas only last about thirty seconds to five minutes, therefore it is very short. Males and females usually associate for no more than two to four days. Gestation takes about ninety five to one hundred and sixty days and pandas normally give birth to single young. The reproductive rate is about one young in every two years. After three to five months of pregnancy the mother will look for a cave to give birth to her offspring. The panda mother often makes a small bed out of bamboo.
